Brazil Localization: NBS and cIndOp Classification Now Assignable to Service Codes
The Brazil Localization SuiteApp now supports assigning Nomenclatura Brasileira de Serviços (NBS) and operation indicator (cIndOp) codes to national and municipal service codes, enabling more granular tax classification on service transactions.
What changed
Service codes in Brazil (4-digit municipal codes and 6-digit national codes at Lists > Brazil Tax Information > Service and MCN Codes) can now carry an additional classification layer: a one-to-one mapping of an NBS code and an operation indicator code (cIndOp).
This is surfaced through a new Classification for Brazil subtab on the item code record for each service. Each service code supports exactly one NBS + cIndOp combination, stored as an Item Code Classification for Brazil child record.
Key details
- NBS (Nomenclatura Brasileira de Serviços) — Brazil's national service nomenclature used for classifying cross-border and domestic service transactions in fiscal obligations.
- cIndOp (Código Indicador de Operação) — an operation indicator code that further qualifies the nature of the service transaction.
- The mapping is one combination per service code. The source does not indicate support for multiple NBS/cIndOp pairs on a single service code.
Record path
- Parent record: the existing item code record opened from Lists > Brazil Tax Information > Service and MCN Codes.
- Child record: Item Code Classification for Brazil, created via the Classification for Brazil subtab > New Item Code Classification for Brazil button.
- Fields on the child record:
Item Code,NBS Code,Operation Indicator Code.
What is unclear
The source is a procedural help article, not a versioned release note. Several things are ambiguous:
- Release version — no version is cited. This may have shipped as a SuiteApp update rather than a platform release.
- SuiteScript / REST exposure — the source does not confirm whether the Item Code Classification for Brazil record is scriptable via
N/record, searchable viaN/searchorN/query, or accessible through the REST Record API. If you integrate service-code data programmatically, verify the record's internal ID and supported operations in the Records Browser. - Impact on tax determination — the "Related Topics" section references tax determination rules for specific MCN and service codes, suggesting NBS/cIndOp values may feed into SuiteTax Latam Engine tax calculations, but the source does not state this explicitly.
What to do
- Confirm the SuiteApp version. Ensure your Brazil Localization SuiteApp bundle is current. Check Customization > SuiteBundler > Search & Install Bundles for available updates.
- Classify existing service codes. Navigate to Lists > Brazil Tax Information > Service and MCN Codes, open each relevant national service code, and add the appropriate NBS + cIndOp pair on the Classification for Brazil subtab.
- Audit integrations. If you push or pull service-code data via SuiteScript, CSV import, or REST, check whether the new child record type is accessible and whether your mappings need updating.
- Review tax determination rules. If you maintain custom tax determination rules keyed on service codes, verify whether NBS or cIndOp values are now evaluated by the SuiteTax Latam Engine and adjust rules accordingly.
